So, I thought I was going to be able to move back to Maine soon. I talked to my old bosses about going back to work, I started looking for apartments, then I talked to my current landlord and depsite the fact that there's a sublet clause in my lease agreement, he has told me that he will not allow me to sublet because years ago he had a bad experience with one of his tenants who he allowed to sublet.

If you can point it out in your lease that it clearly says there's a sublet clause, then, if you pick your candidates right, then you shouldn't have a problem.
And it's always easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission
